Today’s post is a little off topic but I still wanted to share it with you guys 🙂 It just so happens that tomorrow I have a Chinese exam and I thought I would share what I’ve learned so far and my experience with Chinese in general 🙂
My current undergraduate degree requires that I take a foreign language class once a week for at least 2 years and with all the options I was presented with, I chose Chinese! I didn’t know much about the language but I knew that it was spoken by so many people around the world and that to me meant power, which intrigued me. Fast forward 8 months later and I’m really enjoying myself so far even though I was very afraid at first to start because my mind had been filled with ideas that Chinese was really hard. While I struggle a lot,
I have found that there are actually some similarities between Chinese and English!
For example in Chinese to say “I love you” you say “我 爱你 ” which follows English word order exactly! It’s not like in Romance languages where you say “I you love” (yo te amo, je t’aime, io ti amo etc…)
I’ve learned that possessives are placed in the same spot as in English for example when saying “my mom’s house is big” in Chinese the world order is identical…. “我妈妈的 (my mom’s) 家 (house) 很大 (is big)” This structure however is not the same in any of the Romance languages!
As you can see my Chinese is still very basic but I’m not upset. I’m really proud of myself for embarking on this journey and am really enjoying myself. It’s crazy just how much learning a language can change your way of viewing the world. I watch videos in Chinese now (with subtitles of course) listen to music and entertain the thought of traveling there more than ever before!
Language learning is powerful
8 months ago I would never have imagined that I would be considering moving to China or traveling there for an extended period of time. If you asked me 3 years ago if I wanted to live in France I would’ve said you were crazy but here we are. I’ve lived in France for coming up on 2 years, I’m taking classes in french with other french students and I’m a fully functioning member of society. Who knows? Maybe one day I’ll be posting from Shanghai （上海 ）….
so much vegan love to you guys out there,
P.S. for those who speak Chinese…
